How to play Cat Levelling

  1. 1

Pick a coat for your cat and start in the Old Garden. Talk to Nana Mittens by the back door: she sets your first trials.

  2. 2

Hunt for XP. Sneak up on prey and pounce: mice tire and can be cornered, birds only let a sneaking cat close, fish must be caught mid-leap from the bank.

  3. 3

Run the courses: hit every ring in order against the clock for a bronze, silver or gold medal. Hunts ask for a number of one kind of prey before time runs out.

  4. 4

Finish a town cat's trials and reach the right level to claim the power-up at that part of town's shrine. Each one gets you past the next gate.

  5. 5

Keep going to Level 21, catch the glowing Moon Moth on the Clock Tower and ring the Moon Bell. The town stays yours to explore afterwards.

Five parts of town, each behind a gate

The Old Garden
Where every stray starts: a pond, a greenhouse, an orchard and walled garden rooms. Nana's Trials lead to Spring Paws, which makes you jump twice as high.
Whisker Alley and the Docks
Over the 3.2 m fence from the crate. Bins, balconies, awnings, long quays with warehouses, stacked containers and a lighthouse. Pickles' Street Test leads to Climbing Claws.
The Rooftops
Only the ivy goes up. Chimneys, planks strung roof to roof, washing lines and pigeons. Duchess's Standards lead to Zoomies, a dash once per jump.
Moonlight Park
Across a 13 m gap in the broken bridge: the Old Wood with a ruined chapel, Willow Lake with an island gazebo, and the Terraces up to a bandstand. Bolt's Park Challenge leads to Cloud Leap, a double jump.
The Clock Tower
Its first ledge needs a double jump. Climb ledge by ledge to the belfry and the Moon Bell. The spire goes on up to a gold cap 76 m high, the hardest climb in town.

Hunting, courses and levelling up

Thirteen kinds of prey live around town, from mice, crickets and butterflies to frogs, squirrels and crows, and each gets away in its own way. Prey are caught only with a pounce, from the ground or once in mid-air, so timing matters more than speed.

Every part of town has parkour courses with rings to fly through against the clock, and hunts that ask for a number of one kind of prey in time. A first clear pays in full and each better medal pays once, so it is worth coming back for gold.

Each level makes your cat a little faster. Trials are set by the town cats: catches, medals, hunts and yarn. Eighteen balls of yarn are hidden around town for the curious.

Play with friends

Open a room on PlaywithBuddies, pick Cat Levelling and share the room code: up to four cats share the same town, each on their own phone, tablet or computer. Everyone keeps their own story, level and power-ups, and you see each other's cats, names and levels.

Stay close and you share the hunt. When a friend within 25 m catches something or clears a course or hunt, you get half the XP as a pack share. Climb together, race each other to the yarn, or show a new friend the way up the ivy.

Coats for your cat

Choose from six free coats, from Ginger tabby to Calico. Six more gem coats, such as the Ember tabby, Frost tabby and Galaxy cat, can be bought with gems earned from daily rewards and challenges, and you can try each one on your cat before buying.

Coats change how your cat looks, to you and to friends in co-op, and nothing else: every cat runs, jumps and pounces the same.

Tips

  • Sneak (C) when a bird is near: it only lets a sneaking cat close enough to pounce.
  • The pause screen lists your trials and what each shrine still needs.
  • Stuck below a roof? Look for ivy or a tree trunk: with Climbing Claws, they are the way up.

Cat Levelling questions

Is Cat Levelling free?
Yes. It plays in your browser with nothing to download, as a guest or signed in with Google. The game itself has no adverts in it; any ads sit on the site's pages, never in the game. Gem coats are optional and change only how your cat looks.
Can I play Cat Levelling alone?
Yes. The whole story plays solo: five parts of town, 38 trials, courses, hunts and the Moon Bell.
How many friends can play together?
Up to four cats can share one town. Create a room, share the room code, and everyone joins from their own device. Each player keeps their own story and level.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes, with touch controls on a phone held sideways. Graphics adjust themselves automatically; you can also pick Low, Medium or High in Settings.
Where is my progress saved?
In the browser you play on. Clearing this site's browser data starts the story again, so keep playing on the same browser and device.
How long is the story?
Ringing the Moon Bell takes one to two hours of hunting, climbing and courses. After that the town stays open for gold medals, yarn and the climb to the top of the spire.
